The Demon Handling Guide

Demon Handling is the first non-anime idea that the mush I like to call my brain has produced in a while. My goal in life is to be an author, so now that have a good book idea, I figure now's a good time to try to get published. You know, while I'm still young and all. I plan to finish Escaped first, then work more seriously on this.

The Story

(forgive if this comes off disjointed. I'm lisening to my FLCL soundtrack and I'm not sure if it's helping or hindering my creativity)
There is another world much like ours. Fairly modern, but most people are a bit on the poor side and can't afford TV and things like that. In this world there are demons and vampires and magic.
Recently, within the past 15 years or so, young people, teens to mid 20s, have been controling the animal-like demons using magic, for fun. They mostly use them to fight each other for money. The catch is, demons can only be seen at night so the kids involved in this sleep all day and come out at night like vampires. This isn't as popular a hobby as you'd think because these kids are mostly either thrown out of their houses or run away from home. Let's face it, who wants a kid who you never get to see because they sleep all day? The kids involved in this 'demon handling' have built small comunities together where they live their lives, with their own little subculture, consumed by their hobby. They even give them selves new names, in order to prove their old life is behind them.
Because of the hours they keep, demon handlers are very friendly with the often shunned vampires. Vampires tend to be young as well. But the vampires are a story for another day and details about them will be in the book.
This story follows three demon handlers and their fight to stop their hobby and life style from being banned by a society that doesn't understand. I think it's more about the trio's daily life then that fight though. We just happen to join them during this time in their lives.

Characters
I don't have a complete picture of any of the characters yet, so I'll just list what I know for sure about them. A thing to note is that, I'm really bad at designing guys, appearence-wise.

Gamble
Age: 15
Height: 5'8
Gosh, the more I think about him, the more he's becoming like Kumo from Escaped ^_^;; Maybe they're alternate world counter parts? Anyway, he's a little goofy and less serious than Poet and Ransom. The more I try to work out the story, the more he slowly becomes the main character. Even though I wanted equal focus on all the characters, it may work out for the better to present the story through the most normal and least important main character's eyes. (Forgive me for calling you unimportant, Gan-chan, dear!). He's actualy not a DH by a choice of his own. He was rescued by Po and Ran and because of that he kind of fell into the whole demon thing.

Ransom
Age: 14
Height: 5'6
Probably my favorite character in DHG (with the possible execption of the vampires, Elijah and Pepper, though they aren't major characters). He's a little younger and shorter than Po and Gan, but he's the leader of their group. He's very serious and can be a pretty scary guy. Unfortunatly for him, he can be so serious that it's comical and everyone can't help but snicker at him. He wears a cape-thing that always seem to billow and swish even when there's no wind.

Poet
Age: 15-ish
Height: 5'7 1/2
Ermm...Not too sure about her yet.

Elijah
Age: 13 (at least appears to be, you never know with a vampire, do you?)
Vampire boy ^vv^ Close friend of the trio.

Pepper
Age: 12
Very cute, young little vampire boy. Elijah's best friend. They live together.

Specter and Killgore
Age: Late 20s
The guys that work for the government. Their job is to check up on the doings of the 'demon loving brats'. Also the main force in banning DH. Despite being the bad guys, they're very cool and fun characters.
